Nan Thiessen, Effervescent Tea Kombucha, Airdrie, AB, Canada

Q: When did you first discover kombucha?

I first discovered kombucha 6 years ago when my sister started brewing her own. She was the one who convinced me I had to taste it as well as try making it. It didn’t take long and we were hooked.

Q: Why did you start your own kombucha company?

The idea for Effervescent Tea Kombucha was born about 6 years ago when I, Nan Thiessen, started home brewing kombucha tea for family and friends. The operation quickly outgrew the small area in my home that had been designated to kombucha. As more and more people asked for the fizzy beverage, Nan, along with her husband Lonny, realized they had something great, and it could be shared with more people if they created a business. Lonny, being a serial entrepreneur and always ready to start something new, together with Nan and her passion for a healthy lifestyle, have set out to build ETK into a healthy choice brand that is sold in retailers across Western Canada.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of kombucha?

I love trying all other brands and flavors of kombucha. I especially enjoy drinking Tru Buch’s Mojito Mint. It is wonderfully refreshing!

Q: What is your former/current other life or career?

Before I became a kombucha queen/entrepreneur, I was a full time stay at home mom. My two littles are now 5 and almost 7, and are well versed in anything kombucha. They have helped with everything from brewing, bottling, and delivering kombucha. Drinking kombucha is an important part of every meal in our home, and has been since the kids can remember. These two are my biggest fans!

Q: What is a saying that you live by?

The preservation of health is easier than the cure of disease.

Diane Mitchell and Arjuna Veeravagu, Whistler Elixir, Birmingham, Vancouver, Canada

Q: When did you first discover kombucha?

Diane: I was having lunch with a former colleague at Whole Foods, and I decided to try GT’s original. I had no idea what Kombucha was, and I actually thought it was similar to an iced tea (in Canada it is sweetened). Much to my surprise, it was not at all what I was expecting and my friend and I had a good laugh over my sour-faced reaction. It wasn’t until travelling to Kauai many years later, that I truly fell in love with Kombucha when we found Kauai Juice company. Their fresh on-tap flavours were an oasis!

Arjuna: At a random visit to Kauai Juice Company a few years ago while driving around the island. It was a very hot day and perfect timing for my first taste of cold, fresh kombucha on tap. I’ve been hooked ever since!

Q: Why did you start your own kombucha company?

Diane: I have always believed in the power of nutrition and health, and was ready to create a different type of community around this.

Arjuna: Diane and I both love kombucha so much and felt we could create a unique beverage company focused on it. Whistler Elixir combines my passions for natural health, entrepreneurship and mountain living.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of kombucha?

Diane: I am a fool for Rise Kombucha’s Rose & Schizandra. Always.

Arjuna: Clear Mind by Brew Doctor

Q: What is your former/current other life or career?

Diane: I studied Health Science as my undergraduate degree, and hold a diploma in dental hygiene. I am currently practicing as a dental hygienist when I am not brewing kombucha!

Arjuna: I’m a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist and own and manage naturopathic clinics in Vancouver and Victoria.

Fiona Abbott, Alkomy Kombucha Drink, Augusta, WA, Australia

Q: When did you first discover kombucha?

I first discovered Kombucha when a friend gave me a Scoby in 2010 after I’d had my baby – was part-time PT consulting at the time.
I was blown away at how good it was and couldn’t believe that no-one was making it commercially in WA then. Only Mojo (East Coast) who I called and mentioned my intention to take it further and develop a brand in WA. They were so supportive and wished me luck. Their business had grown 3 times in 6 months so knew it was worth putting all my ‘guts’ into.

Q: Why did you start your own kombucha company?

Took me 2 years to finally get it passed by the local Health Authorities to produce and sell the product – they’d never heard of it!

Made my first batch soon after I received my license and applied to sell at the local farmers market and local health food store in 2010 which is still the same Alkomy Original recipe to this day being used. Calls started coming in to stock my brand Alkomy so knew I had to develop the business further but also gradually and at a pace I could handle and afford as a single mother.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of kombucha?

Not sure on favourite flavour, there are so many good ones, but I suppose Passionfruit or Sourcherry or Pomegranate are on top of my list but still keep going back to Alkomy ‘The Original’ delicately flavoured with Lemon Myrtle and Lemon Grass which produces the most subtle unique flavours – seems to mature with age like a good sparkling wine 🙂

Q: What is your former/current other life or career?

My previous career’s were in Africa (Cape Town) in an Advertising Agency as a Radio Producer (Assisting on TV Productions), then moved to Australia and did a brief stint in music production (Sydney) but was also studying to became a personal trainer and nutrition consultant. I worked in that capacity for 7 years, both running my own business and working out of Health Centres/Parks/Gyms.

I then moved to Perth (got over the rat race of Sydney) and moved to my family in Perth and started at Endeavour College of Natural Medicine as a Campus Manager. A love affair and an imminent birth our our child got me to move to the quaint seaside coastal town Augusta and took up a position as a Chiropractic Assistant working for an absolute guru in his field. Can thank him for his wisdom and constant guidance and care – would not be where I am today with Alkomy if we hadn’t crossed paths.

Currently run Alkomy with 1 permanent casual staff member (and friend) who’s basically been there from the start. I also employ 1 casual to back us up so very busy juggling Mum and business owner/operator duties but loving it.

Growing daily at a pace I can manage into the perfect niche market for Alkomy. Loving the journey learning, growing, helping and connecting…feel it’s been a gift given to me to share with a little piece of the Universe for future overall generational health.

Q: What is a saying that you live by?

My motto is: Do it now…live life to the fullest healthy and happy. Never give up on your dreams and aspirations. Be tenacious. Stay on your own path and keep doing what drives you. That’s inevitably what will create success for you which may not necessarily be $$. Success is unique to the individual. The Big Magic!

Becca Baldwin, Lumi Brewing Company, Seoul, Seoul Teukbyeolsi, South Korea

Q: When did you first discover kombucha?

I discovered kombucha as a teenager in Eugene, Oregon, where I grew up. My first kombucha was GT Dave’s, back in the year 1997. Though the first taste of kombucha was quite a shock to my unaccustomed palate, I soon realized how good my body felt when I drank it. As my palate grew more accustomed to the wonderfully acidic and yeasty flavor, I began to crave it and drank it whenever I could.

Q: Why did you start your own kombucha company?

South Korea is a country rich in fermentation traditions, however, when I moved here in December of 2006, I couldn’t find my beloved kombucha anywhere and I missed it terribly. While studying Traditional Korean Alcohol at a brewing school in Seoul (where I studied and eventually taught brewing classes at for six years), I finally got my hands on a SCOBY. After I began brewing my own personal stash of kombucha, friends started asking me if I’d sell them bottles. Though I refused to sell and only accepted trades of homemade kimchi, pickles, jam, and bread, etc. (via an ad hoc bartering system), my homebrewing operation grew considerably. Having discovered the market demand among expats in Seoul for quality brewed kombucha, I finally founded Lumi Brewing Company in April of 2016. We are now available on tap in locations throughout Seoul and will soon hopefully have bottles for distribution. Along with the challenges of operating a business in a foreign country, we have to do quite a bit of customer education as we are introducing quite an unfamiliar product into the local scene. Despite these challenges, the opportunity to share the joy of kombucha with others is immensely rewarding.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of kombucha?

Whenever I travel home to the states, I try as many brands and flavors of kombucha as I can. This past summer, I tried “Amazing Blues” from Holy Kombucha (Fort Worth, TX) and I have to say that it is one of the best things I have tasted in a long time.

Q: What is your former/current other life or career?

I was formerly an elementary school teacher.
